Suzy Kirkaldy Portraits - Orders

The procedure is as follows:

Prices quoted are for head and shoulder studies, the finished art sent to you unframed. The prices may vary greatly according to the size, type or complexity of the subject. I am happy to discuss the commission with you over the phone or email, and to give you a more specific quote when I have viewed the material from which I will be working.

A negotiated discount may be arranged for multiple portraits, family groups, etc.

Gift Vouchers
Portrait Gift Vouchers make a great gift idea, and can be posted to the recipient upon receipt of your payment. Gift Vouchers may be for US$200 or more, and are valid for 12 months.

Size of Portraits

Portraits are in general painted slightly smaller than life size. To give a rough indication of size - the head and neck of a German Shepherd dog would be approximately 32cms long, set on a sheet of paper approximately 50cms high by 38cms wide. A Corgi's head and neck would be perhaps 20cms and the head and ruff of a Persian cat would measure approximately 15cms.

Background Paper Colour

At present I use Canson Mi Teintes and Art Spectrum pastel papers, which are textured to hold the pastel, and come in a wide range of colour shades. I usually carefully choose a background colour that will set off the portrait best. However, if you want to indicate a shade that you would prefer me to use, or avoid, please state this on the order form.

Viewing and shipping of finished portrait

A photograph of the finished portrait will be emailed to you for your approval. I will then quote you the cost of shipping the portrait, and upon receipt of full payment for the portrait, plus shipping costs, the portrait will be on its way to you. (Postage is included in the cost for New Zealand commissions.)

I use New Zealand Post International Express Courier service. The portrait will be safely rolled in a postal tube.

Payment

Payment is usually made by credit card through Paypal (click on the Paypal button below to make a payment). New Zealand customers may pay by cheque if that is more convenient.

Deposit

A non-refundable deposit of 20% is required at the time of confirming the order. Full payment is required after the portrait is approved and before shipping. Payment can be made by credit card through Paypal, or by New Zealand cheque.

Tips for obtaining the best photographs

While it is really helpful to be able to meet with the subject of the portrait, this is often not possible. Consequently most of my work is done from photographs. The clearer the photograph the more satisfying the result. Below are a few tips for photographing, especially, pets.

When taking your own photographs please use natural outdoor light, ideally bright shade or hazy sunshine. Please take colour photographs. (Black and white photos will only be accepted for monotone portraits.) Get down to the same level as the subject and take close up shots so that I can see the eye detail and hair colouring, as well as full head and shoulder shots. A three quarters view of the head is often the most pleasing. Enlist the help of one or two other people when photographing pets - one to hold the pet and the other to attract its attention with food offerings, squeaky toys or hiding.

Send me a good variety of photos, with descriptive notes (i.e. "Lovely expression but hair colour too dark"), and tell me which is your overall favourite.

I am happy to preview your photos before you confirm your order. Please resize them and email them to me; the pictures should be reduced to about 500 pixels on the major dimension (this should make a file of between 50 kbytes and 100 kbytes). If you prefer you may post the photos to me, but be sure to keep your own copies or negatives, in case of postal loss.

NB Professional (copyright) photographs will only be accepted with written permission from the copyright holder (usually the photographer).
